JERUSALEM: Iran has appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as its new supreme leader, following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, in strikes by US and Israeli forces. The Assembly of Experts made the decision despite threats from Israel, giving Mojtaba full authority over state matters.

The conflict has escalated regionally, with Iranian strikes targeting US and allied facilities, while Washington has ordered non-essential diplomatic staff to leave Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, and Bahrain. At least 1,332 Iranian civilians have reportedly been killed.

Oil prices surged past USD 100 a barrel, with Brent crude at USD 108.73, amid fears of supply disruption through the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran has pledged loyalty to Mojtaba, while Israeli and US officials warn of continued military action.

The new leader assumes power during one of the most volatile periods in recent Middle East history, with international tensions affecting global energy and financial markets.
