Death toll from floods, landslides in N. Vietnam rises to 5

HANOI, July 20 : The death toll from torrential rains, flash floods and landslides that battered northern Vietnam over the past week has risen to five, with three people still missing and 10 others injured, the Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority said on Monday.

All the casualties were reported in Lai Chau province, according to the authority.

The severe weather, which affected the region from last Wednesday to Sunday, caused widespread damage.

A total of 427 houses were destroyed or damaged, while about 140 households were urgently evacuated from high-risk areas.

Total economic losses were estimated at 362.46 billion Vietnamese dong (about 14.3 million U.S. dollars).

Local authorities are continuing to assess the full extent of the damage.
