Kathmadnu, April 24: The selection process of the parliamentary party leader of the Nepali Congress (NC) has been postponed.
The selection process scheduled for Friday has been put on hold after the party’s Central Working Committee meeting unanimously directed to select a leader.
NC has formed a taskforce to reach consensus on selecting its parliamentary party leader by Saturday evening, according to Election Committee Coordinator Prakash Rasaily (Snehi).
The taskforce, led by Vice President Bishwaprakash Sharma, includes Vice President Pushpa Bhusal, General Secretaries Pradeep Paudel and Gururaj Ghimire, along with representatives from the election committee.
Rasaily said the party aims to choose the leader unanimously to safeguard broader party interests and address challenges facing democracy and the constitution.
“As directed by the executive committee, efforts will be made to finalize a common candidate by tomorrow evening,” he said, adding that party President Gagan Kumar Thapa is also holding discussions with leaders to build consensus.
The selection process has become complicated as multiple names have emerged for the post.
President Thapa is said to be backing lawmaker Mohan Acharya, while Vice President Sharma has proposed proportional representation lawmaker Bhishmaraj Aangdembey.
Meanwhile, senior leader Arjun Narsingha KC has indicated he will contest if consensus is not reached.
The party has stated that if efforts to reach agreement fail, a fresh election schedule will be announced.
