Mahendranagar, April 30: The police have arrested 1,460 escaped prisoners in Sudurpaschim Province over the past nine months.
The detainees involved in various criminal incidents and having fled after being sentenced to imprisonment and fined by the court and the district administration office, are being arrested and prosecuted.
As many as 1,460 escaped prisoners were apprehended and sent to prison during the first nine months of the current fiscal year (up to April 14), said Padam Bista, spokesperson of the Sudurpaschim Province Police Office in Dhangadhi and Senior Superintendent of Police.
According to the Provincial Police Office, during this period the highest number of fugitive prisoners was arrested from Kailali with 732 abscondees and from another Tarai district, Kanchanpur, with 410. According to spokesperson Bista, 101 fugitives were arrested from Dadeldhura, 12 from Doti, 43 from Achham, 73 from Darchula, nine from Baitadi, 58 from Bajhang and 22 from Bajura.
“Police teams have been deployed across all nine districts here to arrest fugitives who have been sentenced to long-term imprisonment. Police are active everywhere to capture prisoners who escaped from prison during the Gen Z movement,” he said.
During the Gen Z movement on September 8 and 9 last year, a total of 1,458 prisoners escaped from prisons in Sudurpaschim Province, spokesperson Bista said. Among them, 1,120 have been captured while 338 are still at large.
The police have stated that most of the prisoners who escaped from jail may have gone to India and are hiding there.
