Minister Badi calls for policy reforms

Kathmandu, May 22: Minister for Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities and Social Security, Sita Badi, has informed that the Ministry was at work to reorganize the Social Welfare Council and the National Child Welfare Council.

In a meeting with the Women and Social Affairs Committee under the House of Representatives (HoR) on Friday, she reminded the need for policy reforms and the restructuring of subordinate bodies accordingly. Initiating policy and structural changes is essential to achieve the goals set by government, according to her.

Minister Badi informed the Committee members that it was timely to review laws on the rights of children and persons living with disabilities. Even a draft of new legislation has aimed at promoting gender equality, she shared.

The Minister committed to protecting and promoting the constitutional principles of equality and eliminating any form of discrimination, exclusion or violence.

On the occasion, Secretary Radhika Aryal made aware the lawmakers on the Ministry’s current budget. She suggested need for increased funding to enable initiatives for gender and sexual minorities as well as social security.

The Committee members also advocated for allocation of adequate budget to execute the Ministry’s programmes effectively.
