Education Ministry concerned over incident of student abuse

Kathmandu, July 14: The Ministry of Education and Sports has taken interest over the incident of a teacher abusing a student at Khawaling School in Boudha, Kathmandu.

After an audio-visual of the school teacher Sona Rana beating a Grade 4 student went viral on social media, Education Minister Sasmit Pokharel held a discussion with the student, the school administrator and the principal regarding the incident at the ministry on Tuesday. Minister Pokharel also held a separate discussion with the student.

He also provided sports equipment to the students as an encouragement for study and sports.

On the occasion, Minister Pokharel pledged to facilitate the necessary legal process, if necessary, in the case of incident of corporal punishment. He also drew attention to the fact that the school should alert the teachers involved in the incident so that such incidents do not have a psychological impact on the students. He also urged the school to provide necessary training and other arrangements for teachers to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future.

Although the incident happened a year ago, the Ministry has taken the initiative to prevent such irregularities from recurring as well as reaching out to the school and the victim.

According to Sunil Rana, principal of Khawaling School, teacher Rana was already expelled from the school.
