Kathmandu, May 13: The National ID and Civil Registration Department has said that services have been disrupted across the country because of technical issues in the National Identity Management Information System (NIDMIS).
Issuing a notice on Tuesday, the Department said that services would remain suspended until maintenance work on the system is completed.
According to Director Kamal Raj Pandey of National ID Section for the Department, the system has been unable to verify National Identity numbers issued during new enrollments after technical problems emerged on May 4. For the past nine days, new or additional enrollment could not be done from the system, according to Pandey.
“We are looking into the issues and effortful to address the technical problems at the earliest possible,” said Pandey. Mainly, there was a problem to validate NIN number which is generated after the applicants register their enrollment and biometric verification, he said.
The Department had earlier issued a notice on May 6 stating that repair work was under way. However, as the problem has yet to be resolved, services continue to be affected.
The Department has informed all District Administration Offices, Area Administration Offices and all service centres, including the National ID unit located within the Narayanhiti Palace Museum premises, about the disruption.
“Repair work on the problems seen in the system is still ongoing. New enrollment services will continue to be affected until the maintenance work is completed,” the department said in the notice.
The Department added that another notice would be issued once services resume.
Based on data available as of mid-March, 2026, the Department has registered personal and biometric details of around 20 million (19,568,837) Nepali citizens for the national ID. Out of those registrations, 7,495,711 cards have been printed and of the printed cards, 3,778,875 citizens have actually received their physical, chip-based National ID cards.
