When Dr. Lynn and I (Niroj) started our journey with horses and established Wind Horse Stables( Nepal ) in 2007, our vision was to introduce modern horse riding concepts while preserving the charm, tradition, and values of horsemanship in Nepal.
As one of the first operating professional stables in Nepal, we at Wind Horse Stables feel it is our responsibility to share some of our experiences and observations with the growing equestrian community. After nearly 19 years of working with horses, riders, and the equestrian industry, we have learned many valuable lessons that we believe are worth sharing.
1) We should gradually reduce the use of horse-drawn carriages in weddings.
With increasing traffic congestion, urban challenges, and the growing number of welfare concerns involving carriage horses, their well-being must remain our priority.
2) It is important to see horses as our partners rather than as objects of entertainment. Horses deserve respect, proper care, understanding, and a life that values their physical and mental well-being
3) It is easy to buy and collect a large number of horses, but it is equally important to have a proper long-term management, retirement, and welfare plan before bringing horses into a riding club. Responsible ownership means planning for a horse’s entire lifetime, not just its working years.
4) Every riding club should place horse welfare, rider safety, education, and professional standards above commercial interests. 5) Quality training, proper facilities, knowledgeable staff, and ethical horse management are more important than simply increasing the number of horses in a stable.
6)The future of equestrian sports in Nepal depends on responsible horsemanship, continuous learning, and a genuine commitment to horse welfare. These thoughts are not intended as criticism of anyone.
They are simply lessons we have learned through nearly two decades of experience. We hope they encourage positive discussions and help create a stronger, more professional, and welfare-focused equestrian community for future generations.
